As this year ends and 2021 begins we are filled with good intentions to create new habits that make us happier and healthier. These good intentions usually last two maybe three weeks before the old habits settle back in for another cycle. The reason? It varies for all of us, but the most common reason is our desire to take huge leaps instead of the many small steps. When we fail (which happens frequently) we stop and that big goal gets put back on the shelf for another time. Don’t get me wrong. Big ideas can lead to life-changing moments but we have to learn to crawl before we walk and to walk before we run.
We know that exercise makes us stronger giving us more energy/stamina/tenacity to make it through every day. Yet exercise is one of the most frequent resolutions made and quickly broken. I have some monumental goals for cycling this year that will only happen if I follow my weekly training program. But on cold winter mornings, like this one, the idea of cleaning the basement sounds better to me than leaving the comfort of my home to ride an indoor cycle.
Let’s keep it simple. Here are two things that you can do at home every day in the span of 10-15 minutes: The first is a series of basic movements designed to help your body move in a more coordinated way; The second is a four-minute series of exercises engaging the major muscle groups. Neither video requires any equipment and can be done anywhere in your home (even your basement). These are good first steps and a good place to start. Try them and after a few weeks send me a message letting me know how you are doing. You can also find them and others by clicking on the fitness video link on my website: www.drmadosky.com.
